Nitric acid 53% is a highly reactive laboratory chemical with a wide range of applications. In its concentration it is capable of oxidizing and nitriding a range of materials, being used in inorganic chemistry to produce salts and oxides. It is composed of nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen dissolved in water, which leads to its strongly acidic nature. Thanks to its properties, it is also used in organic chemistry, where it contributes to the nitration of organic molecules. Nitric acid 53% also finds application in metallurgy, where it is used to passivate stainless steel and etch metals.

Nitric acid should be stored by itself, if possible. If not, it should be stored only with compatible oxidizing acids. Storage locations should be located away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. Storage location should be plastic corrosive storage cabinets or metal cabinets coated with anti-corrosion liner.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from combustible substances. Keep container tightly closed when not in use. Do not store near alkaline or organic substances. Store in a cool place away from heated areas, sparks and flame. Do not add any other material to the container.
Do not store in a damp atmosphere. Do not get in eyes, on skin or on clothing. Do not allow smoking and food consumption while handling. Handle in accordance with good storage and handling practices. Do not store near flammable substances. Wash thoroughly after handling.
