Product Description

Sulfuric acid is an inorganic strong acid that can react with the vast majority of metals. High concentration sulfuric acid has strong water absorption and can be used as a dehydrating agent to carbonize carbohydrate containing substances such as wood, paper, cotton and linen fabrics, and biological skin. When mixed with water, a large amount of heat energy is also released. It has strong corrosiveness and oxidizing properties, so it should be used with caution. It is an important industrial raw material that can be used to manufacture fertilizers, drugs, explosives, pigments, detergents, batteries, etc. It is also widely used in industries such as petroleum purification, metal smelting, and dyes.

Physical Properties

Pure sulfuric acid is generally a colorless oily liquid with a density of 1.84 g/cm ³ and a boiling point of 338 ℃. It can dissolve with water in any proportion and release a large amount of heat, causing water to boil. When heated to 290 ℃, sulfur trioxide begins to release and eventually becomes a 98.54% aqueous solution, boiling at 317 ℃ to form an azeotropic mixture. The high boiling point and viscosity of sulfuric acid are due to the strong hydrogen bonds within its molecules. Due to its high dielectric constant, sulfuric acid is a good solvent for electrolytes, while it is not ideal as a non electrolyte solvent. The melting point of sulfuric acid is 10.371 ℃, and adding water or sulfur trioxide will lower the freezing point.

Dehydration property

Dehydration is a property of concentrated sulfuric acid, not dilute sulfuric acid. Concentrated sulfuric acid has strong dehydration properties and is dehydrated according to the composition ratio of water. Substances that can be dehydrated by concentrated sulfuric acid are generally organic compounds containing hydrogen and oxygen elements. Organic compounds in substances such as sucrose, sawdust, paper scraps, and cotton are dehydrated to produce black charcoal, which is called carbonization.

Strong Oxidizing Properties

Sulfuric acid has strong oxidizing properties at high concentrations, which is one of its biggest differences from dilute sulfuric acid. At the same time, it also has dehydration, low volatility, acidity, water absorption, and other properties. Like nitric acid, the reduction products of concentrated sulfuric acid may be S, H2S, or SO2 depending on the strength, type, and amount of the reducing agent.
