Nitric acid is a strong oxidizing and corrosive acid, belonging to the category of monobasic inorganic strong acids. It is one of the six major inorganic strong acids and an important chemical raw material. It can be used in industry to make fertilizers, pesticides, explosives, dyes, pigments, salts, etc. Pure nitric acid solute is colorless, but due to its decomposition into nitrogen oxides and water, old samples tend to obtain yellow castings. The concentration of most commercially available nitric acid in water is 68%. When the solution contains more than 86% HNO3, it is called fuming nitric acid. Based on the amount of nitrogen dioxide present, fuming nitric acid is further characterized as white fuming nitric acid with a concentration higher than 95%, or red fuming nitric acid with a concentration higher than 86%. |
