Pure nitric acid is a colorless and transparent liquid, while concentrated nitric acid is a light yellow liquid (dissolved in nitrogen dioxide). Under normal circumstances, it is a colorless and transparent liquid with a suffocating and irritating odor.
The nitric acid content in concentrated nitric acid is about 68%, which is volatile and produces white mist in the air (similar to concentrated hydrochloric acid). It is a small droplet of nitric acid formed by the combination of nitric acid vapor (usually nitrogen dioxide decomposed from concentrated nitric acid) and water vapor. Can be mixed with water. Can form azeotropic mixtures with water.
For dilute nitric acid, it is generally believed that the boundary between concentration and dilution is 6mol/L. The concentration of commercially available ordinary reagent grade nitric acid is about 68%, while the concentration of industrial grade concentrated nitric acid is 98%. Usually, the concentration of nitric acid in smoke is about 98%.

Nitric acid should be stored by itself, if possible. If not, it should be stored only with compatible oxidizing acids. Storage locations should be located away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. Storage location should be plastic corrosive storage cabinets or metal cabinets coated with anti-corrosion liner.
