Sulfuric acid (alternative spelling sulphuric acid), also known as vitriol, is a mineral acid composed of the elements sulfur, oxygen and hydrogen, with molecular formula H2SO4. It is a colorless, odorless, and viscous liquid that is soluble in water and is synthesized in reactions that are highly exothermic.
Its corrosiveness can be mainly ascribed to its strong acidic nature, and, if at a high concentration, its dehydrating and oxidizing properties. It is also hygroscopic, readily absorbing water vapor from the air.Upon contact, sulfuric acid can cause severe chemical burns and even secondary thermal burns; it is very dangerous even at lower concentrations.

Acidic: Pure sulfuric acid is heated to 290 ℃ to decompose and release a portion of sulfur trioxide until the acid concentration drops to 98.3%. At this time, sulfuric acid is a constant boiling solution with a boiling point of 338 ° C. Anhydrous sulfuric acid reflects the ability to give protons, while pure sulfuric acid still has strong acidity. The acidity of 98% sulfuric acid is basically the same as that of pure sulfuric acid. However, oleic acid, which dissolves sulfur trioxide, is a superacidic system with stronger acidity than pure sulfuric acid. However, there is a common misconception that dilute sulfuric acid is more acidic than concentrated sulfuric acid, which is incorrect. Indeed, dilute sulfuric acid undergoes complete ionization in the first step, producing a large amount of hydrated hydrogen ions H3O+; However, like water, concentrated sulfuric acid produces a portion of hydrogen sulfate ions H3SO4+through self ionization. It is precisely this portion of hydrogen sulfate ions that combine with protons, resulting in pure sulfuric acid having a very strong acidity. Although it is less acidic, its acidity is much stronger than that of hydrated protons. Therefore, the Hamiltonian acidity function of pure sulfuric acid is as high as -12.0.
