Chemical Property

Instability:

Concentrated nitric acid is unstable and will decompose when exposed to light or heat, releasing nitrogen dioxide. The nitrogen dioxide produced by decomposition dissolves in nitric acid, resulting in a light yellow appearance. But dilute nitric acid is relatively stable, with 70% to 90% nitric acid not decomposing at 0 ℃ in the dark.


Strong acidity:

In general, it is believed that nitric acid can be completely ionized in aqueous solutions, and nitric acid has strong acidity.


esterification:

Nitric acid can undergo esterification reaction with alcohol to produce corresponding nitrate esters.


Nitrification reaction:

Concentrated nitric acid or fuming nitric acid mixed with dehydrating agents (concentrated sulfuric acid, phosphorus pentoxide) can be used as nitration reagents to initiate nitration reactions on some compounds.
