hydrogen peroxide
XLW
Hydrogen peroxide, (H2O2), a colourless liquid usually produced as aqueous solutions of various strengths, used principally for bleaching cotton and other textiles and wood pulp, in the manufacture of other chemicals, as a rocket propellant, and for cosmetic and medicinal purposes. Solutions containing more than about 8 percent hydrogen peroxide are corrosive to the skin.
Pour it on a wound and watch the serious bubble action! It kills germs, but soap and warm water do the same job much more gently. Hydrogen peroxide may irritate the delicate tissue around cuts or sores and make you take longer to heal. Still, it might be a good thing to stash it in your first aid kit in case you’re not near clean water.
Hydrogen peroxide is the most common inorganic peroxide. Due to its oxidising properties, it is used in bleach formulations, disinfection applications and also in the manufacture of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
The product is used as a bleaching agent in the production of paper pulp; as a reagent for chemical synthesis; in the detoxification and purification of water and effluent and for copper etching of printed circuit boards and cleaning semiconductors.
